The Neolithic henge at Knowlton dates back more than three millennia before the construction of a Norman Church near its centre in the 12th century. Perhaps this was intended to demonstrate the transition from pagan worship to Christianity.
The location of Knowlton Church is historically significant to pagan worshipers. The standing stones that had stood on the site for millennia were Broken down and used to build the church. Ghostly faces have been seen at the doors and windows, and a weeping nun is reported to kneel beyond the church walls. A phantom horse and rider is said to gallop across the site just before dawn when the night is at its darkest.
